Design

An eleven-piece pattern built around a slightly dropped, long waistline, with the dress opening unusually at the left shoulder and underarm rather than down the center front. Drop shoulders lead into an optional one-piece full-length sleeve, finishable with a soft frill cuff. The one-piece skirt gets its movement from an inset section at the left side and shirring at each upper side edge, letting the fabric drape softly at both front and back, while sash ends at the left front can be tied for extra definition at the waist.

A Moment in Fashion History

Pattern 3904 appears in Vintage4me2's own holdings of a 1924 Ladies' Home Journal catalog, on a page devoted to slightly long-waisted and one-piece slip-on dresses. The asymmetrical shoulder opening and shirred, draped skirt reflect a growing interest in soft, dressmaker-style draping over rigid seaming — a hallmark of mid-1920s eveningwear and better daytime dresses alike.
