Design
Pattern 3195 builds its interest at the hem and shoulder rather than through elaborate seaming. The left side-front vest opening offers a tailored focal point, optionally finished with a collar, while the sleeve can be made short and gently gathered into a soft puff or cut full-length and fitted for a more streamlined look. The skirt gathers at each side and can be left with a plain straight edge or cut into a scalloped outline — a small detail the period praised as adding "a quaint charm." Ten pattern pieces in all.
A Moment in Fashion History
Pattern 3195 was featured in the July 1921 issue of The Ladies' Home Journal, in a beach-and-boardwalk feature titled "The New Shade for Summer." The magazine describes this design made up in tan organdie flowered in navy, sashed with navy grosgrain ribbon, and specifically calls out its puff sleeves and scalloped hem as giving the dress its charm — exactly the details built into this pattern.
