Design

This six-piece blouse crosses at the front in a soft surplice closing, gathered down into a snug three-piece lower band at the hip rather than left loose — a fitted finish against the blouson-style bodice above. The kimono sleeve is cut in one with the body, gathered to a wristband at full length, and perforated so it can be cut short and finished with a separate cuff instead, giving the pattern real range from a cool short-sleeved summer version to a long-sleeved cooler-weather one.

A Moment in Fashion History

Pattern 3920 appears in Vintage4me2's own holdings of a 1924 Ladies' Home Journal catalog, on the same guide-chart page as nearly a dozen other blouse and waist patterns of the season. The surplice front and kimono sleeve were dressmaking staples of the era, prized for how easily they could be cut and assembled at home without the tailoring of a set-in sleeve.

Illustration

The cover illustration has been digitally restored and enhanced by Judy Yates to highlight the original fashion artwork while preserving the character and artistry of this historic Ladies' Home Journal pattern envelope.

Connections

This blouse is one of three distinct takes on the ladies' blouse featured together on the same page of our 1924 Ladies' Home Journal catalog — each solving the era's move away from a fitted waist in its own way. See our other two blouses from that same page: the left-side-front closing Pattern 3824, and the straight-hanging, sashed Pattern 3898.
