Design

Ladies' Home Journal Pattern 3104 joins two foundation pieces into one five-piece garment. A plaited camisole is set into a fitted yoke at the bust, with ribbon shoulder straps, and closes at back. Below, three-piece plaited drawers - front, back, and a fitted waistband - attach at the natural waistline, gathered into soft plaits front and back for ease of movement. The whole garment opens down the back for dressing.

A Moment in Fashion History

Combination garments like this one - joining camisole and drawers into a single piece - were a practical mid-1920s answer to the era's move toward slimmer, less bulky silhouettes under a dress. Fewer separate layers meant less bulk at the waist, and one seamless piece was simpler to launder and mend than two.

The cover illustration has been digitally restored and enhanced by Judy Yates to highlight the original fashion artwork while preserving the character and artistry of this historic Ladies' Home Journal pattern envelope.

Connections

One of the most revealing things you can learn looking at a full season of new old stock patterns is the relationship between the foundation garments and the dresses they supported. See Them All!
