Design
Pattern 4377 is built around a simple, loose tunic top worn over a slim companion skirt — the ease built into the top rather than the skirt does the work of a maternity fit. View A has three-quarter sleeves, a round neckline with a single button-and-tab closure, and ties at the hip with a soft drawstring hem. View B trades the sleeve for a cap sleeve and the button for a brooch-style closure, keeping the same drawstring hem. Both sit over the same straight skirt, part of McCall's "Easy to Sew" line aimed at simple home construction.
A Moment in Fashion History
By the late 1950s, maternity separates increasingly borrowed the loose, unfitted tunic shapes that were already trending in ordinary daywear, letting a drawstring or tie do quiet, adjustable work rather than a visible maternity panel. McCall's marketed this pattern specifically under its "Easy to Sew" banner, aimed at home sewers who wanted a manageable project during pregnancy itself.
