Design
McCall 880 offers two ways to dress a baby or toddler, both built from the same easy yoke construction: a shaped front and back yoke, gathered skirt, and short puffed sleeves finished with a sleeveband cuff. View A pairs the dress with a contrasting collar and a coordinating bonnet, giving a two-tone look with a soft, curved brim tied under the chin. View B keeps the dress in a single fabric throughout, with a hand-embroidered floral motif worked at the yoke using the pattern's included transfer, and its own separate bonnet cut from the whole-brim and side-crown pieces. Both views close simply down the back, keeping construction light for a small child's wardrobe.
A Moment in Fashion History
By the early 1940s, home sewing patterns for babies and toddlers favored this kind of simple yoke-front dress - quick to stitch from a modest amount of fabric, with just enough hand embroidery to make it feel special. A matching bonnet was still standard for a well-dressed baby heading outdoors, tied simply under the chin rather than elaborately trimmed.
