Design

Simplicity Pattern 6817 is a sweet, simple wardrobe for a 1960s baby doll. The party dress (View 1) has puffed sleeves, a high yoke, and a full skirt with a deep ruffle, trimmed with lace edging and ribbon. The cape (View 2) is a full circle edged in gathered lace, with a matching hood tied under the chin with ribbon. The long wrapper (View 3) has raglan sleeves gathered with elastic and closes down the front with three ribbon bows. Underneath go a sleeveless slip with lace-trimmed panties (View 4). For warm days there are two sunsuits: a lace-edged bandeau top with ribbon shoulder straps and matching panties (View 5), and a rick-rack trimmed top that ties at the sides with ribbon, with panties and a matching kerchief scarf (View 6). Simplicity suggested cottons and blends, with lightweight wools for the cape. Snap closings throughout.

Doll Details

By the mid-1960s, baby dolls were made with soft vinyl bodies, and this wardrobe was drafted to fit them. The envelope names Betsy Wetsy, Ideal's drink-and-wet doll, licensed by name from Ideal Toy Corp., along with Ginny Baby and Sweetie Pie. This pattern is a Size 14", for a doll 14 inches tall with an 8½-inch waist. For this size, the dress takes ⅜ yard of fabric, the cape and hat ½ yard of 35" or ⅜ yard of 54" fabric, the wrapper ⅜ yard, and the slip and panties and each sunsuit ¼ yard.
