Design

Simplicity Pattern 4652 is a full wardrobe built around one little dress. Views 1, 2, and 3 share a bodice with short puff sleeves and a gathered skirt: View 1 adds lace-edged, heart-shaped pockets and a ribbon sash, View 2 a contrasting weskit that buttons over the bodice, and View 3 a pinafore trimmed in baby rick-rack and decorated with an embroidered appliqué from the included transfer. The slip (View 4) has a gathered skirt and lace-edged panties. For play, View 5 pairs a pinafore-style top with its own heart pocket, panties, and a triangle kerchief, and View 6 is a pair of pajamas, the top with kimono sleeves and the pants and cap gathered on elastic, trimmed in embroidered eyelet insertion. The coat (View 7) has raglan sleeves, three buttons, and a hood faced to the edge and tied with ribbon. The dresses, slip, top, and pajamas close with snaps. Simplicity suggested cottons and blends for every view, and wools and blends for the coat. Twenty-three pieces plus the transfer.

Doll Details

Mattel introduced Chatty Cathy in 1960, and with a pull of the string at her back she spoke real phrases, making her one of the most popular dolls of the decade. She stood about 20 inches tall, and this wardrobe was drafted for her in one size. This pattern is a Size 20½", for a doll 20½ inches tall with an 11⅛-inch waist. Fabric for each view runs from ⅛ yard (bodice, weskit) to ½ yard (pajamas and cap, coat and hood), in 35" to 45" fabric, with lace edging, rick-rack, eyelet insertion, elastic, and ribbon as listed on the envelope.
