Design

McCall's Pattern 9449 is a late-1960s wardrobe drafted for the round tummies and short limbs of chubby baby and toddler dolls. The A-line jumper (View A) is cut from felt or leather-like fabric and trim-stitched, with no hems to turn. The dress (View B) has a yoke, a neck ruffle, and long sleeves elasticized at the wrists to form ruffles, trimmed in baby rick-rack or, in the second version, lace. The pinafore (View C) has a lace-trimmed yoke. For bedtime, the long robe (View D) is edged in bias tape with ties at the waist, and the nightgown (View E) has corded piping at the neck, yoke, and armholes. The coat (View F), also in felt or leather-like fabric, has a center back pleat, patch pockets, contrast trim-stitching, and a matching beret. The white collared dress (View G) has a front pleat, with tatting lace on the collar and elasticized sleeve edges. Panties are included. McCall's suggested cottons, linen, dotted swiss, organdy, checked gingham, challis, piqué, and eyelet for the dresses and pinafore, and cotton flannel, cotton satin, seersucker, or challis for the robe and nightgown.

Doll Details

By the late 1960s the toy shelf was crowded with chubby baby and toddler dolls, and McCall's printed a long list of them on the envelope, sorted by size. This pattern is a Size Medium, for dolls 17 to 18½ inches tall with an 11- to 14-inch chest and a 6- to 6¾-inch neck. McCall's advised measuring the doll's body against the chart and allowing for any adjustment before cutting. For this size, the jumper takes ⅜ yard of 36" felt, the dress ⅝ yard, the pinafore ⅜ yard, the robe ⅝ yard, the nightgown ½ yard, the coat and beret ⅝ yard of felt, the collared dress ½ yard, and the panties ⅜ yard.
