Design

Advance Pattern 5665 dresses a doll for the cowboy craze of the early 1950s, when children across America followed Hopalong Cassidy and Roy Rogers. The Cowgirl Doll (View 1) wears a long-sleeved blouse with a pointed collar, wristbands, and a ribbon bow at the neck, under a short bolero edged in novelty braid. Her flared skirt has a belt and patch pockets, and her wide-brimmed hat is made in top, side, and brim sections, interfaced with buckram, bound in bias tape, and tied with ribbon. The Apron Doll (View 2) wears a dress with puffed sleeves, a fitted bodice, and a flared skirt, covered by a bib apron with a deep ruffle, tied at the back with a ribbon bow. Advance suggested denim, gingham, woolens, flannel, or fur cloth for the cowgirl, and chambray, gingham, novelty cotton, or taffeta for the apron doll. Twenty pieces, with illustrated instructions for cutting and making.

Advance sized this pattern by the doll's height, with a waist measure for each size, so it fits the many girl dolls of the period rather than one named brand. This pattern is a Size 23", for a doll 23 inches tall with a 10¼-inch waist. For this size, the blouse takes ⅜ yard of fabric, the bolero ¼ yard, the skirt ½ yard of 35" or ⅜ yard of 54" fabric, the hat ⅜ yard, the dress ½ yard of 35" or ⅜ yard of 39" fabric, and the apron ½ yard.
