Design
Vogue 1311 is built for a slender, architectural line, with a boned underbodice giving it the kind of internal structure couture eveningwear relies on rather than relying on the outer fabric alone. A notch at the front neckline is optional, and the dress can be made with bracelet-length kimono sleeves or as a clean sleeveless version. Two further variations refine the bodice: one with a separate yoke and band for a more graphic, seamed effect, and one with a faced or lined yoke for a smoother finish - including a striking color-blocked rendition pairing a dark bodice with a contrasting skirt.
A Moment in Fashion History
By 1964, the House of Dior's day-to-day design direction belonged to Marc Bohan, who had led the house since 1960 after Yves Saint Laurent's departure and would remain its longest-serving designer for nearly thirty years. This slender, notch-necked dress reflects Bohan's quieter, more wearable interpretation of Dior's legacy - less headline-making than Saint Laurent's brief, famous tenure, but the version of Dior that actually reached most women's closets through the 1960s.
