Design
Pattern 9825 joins a full, flared skirt to a fitted bodice at the natural waistline, finished with a soft draped cowl at the front neckline. The back can be cut high (Version B) or dramatically low in a deep oval (Version A), a striking contrast to the modest front view. The sleeve may be long and fitted or short, and a novelty belt cinches the waist. Nine pattern pieces in all.
A Moment in Fashion History
Vogue's own envelope artwork for 9825 makes the pattern's dual personality plain: the same dress reads as a demure floral day dress with its high back, or an evening-ready cocktail frock once cut with the deep oval back - shown here in a sleek charcoal with a single silk rose at the waist. This kind of front-modest, back-dramatic construction was a favored trick of late-1950s eveningwear, offering glamour without sacrificing daytime versatility from a single pattern.
