Design
Pattern 6040 is a three-piece co-ordinate wardrobe. The straight jacket has an open front with a notched collar and bias-cut patch pockets, finished with just-above-wrist-length sleeves pleated to buttoned band cuffs. The slim skirt is fitted with a center-back inverted pleat for ease of movement. A sleeveless overblouse completes the set, closing with a back zipper below a high neckline. Eighteen pattern pieces in all.
A Moment in Fashion History
By the mid-1960s, the tailored separates suit had become a wardrobe cornerstone, prized for the flexibility of mixing a single jacket and skirt with multiple blouses. Vogue's own envelope artwork for 6040 shows the design in both a graphic houndstooth check and a solid chartreuse, illustrating exactly this kind of interchangeable, build-a-wardrobe styling that defined the era's approach to office and daytime dressing.

The cover illustration has been digitally restored and enhanced by Judy Yates to highlight the original fashion artwork while preserving the character and artistry of this historic Vogue pattern envelope.
