Design
Pattern 5345 is a stole-coat cut in just three pattern pieces, open at the sides below deep kimono armholes, with released darts shaping either side of a collarless neckline. It comes in three lengths: Version A is a full, floor-length evening stole-coat; Version B falls to about mid-calf; and Version C is a short, cropped topper. No hem is allowed on any version, keeping the clean, unadorned edge that gives the design its easy, versatile silhouette. Version C can optionally be finished with novelty braid binding.
A Moment in Fashion History
By the early 1960s, the stole-coat had become an essential evening cover-up, prized for slipping easily over a gown without disturbing an elaborate hairstyle or jewelry. Vogue's envelope art shows the same simple three-piece shape rendered in gold brocade, ruby satin, and green tweed for evening, alongside a cropped Version C worn as a smart daytime topper - note that the dress shown beneath it is not included in the pattern.
