Design

Simplicity 4963 pairs a sweetly detailed bodice with a full, softly gathered skirt for year-round girls' wear. The heart-shaped neckline is framed by ruffled shoulder trim, and the bodice fastens down the back with a row of buttons. A slim inset belt defines the waist, with tie ends finishing in a back bow. Style I dresses the ruffling and hem in dainty lace edging and adds two patch pockets to the skirt. Style II swaps the lace for rick-rack braid and is intended for lengthwise striped material, giving the same silhouette a sportier, more graphic look. Sleeves are gathered at the top with a pleat at the lower edge, and the pattern includes twelve pieces in all.

A Moment in Fashion History

Wartime fabric conservation shaped much of girls' fashion in the early 1940s, favoring simple, efficient construction over elaborate trimming. Simplicity 4963 reflects this practical approach while still offering a young wearer a dressy option, using lace or rick-rack as an affordable, low-yardage way to add character to an otherwise straightforward silhouette.
