Design

Simplicity Pattern 4585 has a fitted bodice with a square front neckline and back button closing, set over a skirt cut and gathered in three tiers. View 1 has short gathered sleeves and a bias-bound neckline, with self-fabric tie ends that fasten into a bow at the back, plus ribbon trim along the skirt. View 2 is trimmed with lace insertion and edging and finished with a ribbon sash. View 3 is sleeveless, with a bias-trimmed neckline and bow ties. Nine pieces total.

A Moment in Fashion History

The July 1954 Simplicity catalog pitched this pattern as a dress for every occasion, promising it was "so adorable for parties, play or school" and suggesting organdy, calico, or gingham depending on how dressy the result should be. That versatility reflects the mid-1950s approach to children's party dresses generally: the fitted bodice over a tiered, gathered skirt echoes the full-skirted silhouette reshaping women's fashion at the time, scaled down and rendered practical enough for everyday wear as well as special occasions.
