Design
Simplicity Pattern 1978 pairs a sleeveless dress with a square neckline, full softly pleated skirt, and back button opening with a collarless cardigan-style jacket finished with short kimono sleeves and contrasting band trim. View 1 has the dress and jacket cut from contrasting fabrics, with bias and bow trim on the dress and dress-fabric trim on the jacket. View 2 adds a contrasting yoke, skirt band, and jacket trim, all outlined in lace edging. Fourteen pieces given.
A Moment in Fashion History
Dress-and-jacket sets like this one gave a simple sleeveless play dress the option to dress up for cooler weather or a more formal occasion, without sewing an entirely separate garment. The contrast-fabric trim treatments, shown here in coordinating florals and solids, reflect the mid-1950s taste for playful color-blocking even in the smallest sizes.
