Design

Simplicity 1559 offers three finishes on a fitted-waist, full-skirted child's dress from eleven pattern pieces. View 1 pairs a square neckline with short puffed sleeves and rick-rack trimming the bodice and skirt. View 2 keeps the square neckline but adds armhole bands, with contrasting bands at the neck edge and skirt hem, finished with contrasting bows at the shoulder and skirt band. View 3 dresses things up with a contrasting yoke and collar, plus contrasting bias and button trim through the bodice and skirt. Suggested fabrics run from cotton, calico, percale, gingham, chambray, rayon, and taffeta (View 1), to velveteen, cotton, organdy, dotted swiss, velvet, rayon, nylon, and taffeta with a cotton, rayon, or nylon contrast (View 2), to even plaid or plain cotton, gingham, chambray, rayon, taffeta, wool, or jersey with a cotton or rayon contrast (View 3).

A Moment in Fashion History

A fitted waist over a full, gathered skirt was the standard silhouette for girls' party dresses through the 1950s, echoing the shape of women's fashion at the time. Offering three distinct trim treatments from a single pattern - rick-rack, contrast banding, or a yoke and collar - let a home sewist vary the look across several dresses without buying a new pattern each time.
