Design
Marketed as "simple to make," Pattern 1552 builds each of its three tops from just two major pieces, all sharing the same short kimono sleeve and easy A-line swing through the body. View 1 dresses up a plain scoop neckline with a small collar, welt trim, and a soft bow at the front placket. View 2 takes a different route entirely, closing with frog fasteners under a stand-up collar for a deliberately Chinese-inspired silhouette. View 3 keeps things simplest of all, with just a low, bias-bound rounded neckline finished with a bow. All three are cut generously through the body to move with a changing figure without any fitted seaming to adjust.
A Moment in Fashion History
By the mid-1950s, the loose "swing" or trapeze silhouette had become a maternity wardrobe staple, and Simplicity leaned into it here with a genuinely easy construction — just two pattern pieces per top. View 2's frog closures and stand-up collar reflect a broader mid-century fascination with East Asian-inspired silhouettes in Western ready-to-wear and home sewing alike.
