Design
Simplicity 1231 builds a full wardrobe of coordinating playtime separates from just eight pattern pieces. View 1 pairs a street-length wrap-around skirt with tapered, knee-length pants slit at the side seams, meant to be worn together or apart in matching or contrasting fabrics. View 2 takes the same wrap-around construction into a plaid kilt skirt, fringed along the right front edge, worn here over coordinating shorts. A skirt-type zipper closes the pants, and both skirt views share the same wrap-and-button construction at the waist.
A Moment in Fashion History
By the mid-1950s, the wrap-around skirt had become a favorite for casual, active wear, prized for slipping easily over shorts, pants, or a swimsuit. Pairing it here with tapered pants cut short enough to peek out beneath the skirt's wrap opening, or with a fringed kilt and matching shorts, this pattern reflects the era's growing appetite for interchangeable, mix-and-match separates built for informal daytime activity rather than a single fixed outfit.
