Below the waist, a four-piece circular skirt is pressed in an inverted plait at center-front and attached under a removable belt; a leather belt may be worn in its place. Width at the lower edge runs about 1¾ yards, and in this size the dress measures 50 inches at center-back from neck to lower edge, including a 3-inch hem. Size 20 takes 3¾ yards of 39-inch fabric (or 4⅛ yards of 35-inch, or 2½ yards of 54-inch) for the long-sleeved dress with contrasting collar and cuffs, or 3⅜ yards of 39-inch for the separate short-sleeved dress, plus 1 yard of 39-inch contrasting fabric for the cape collar and cuffs and 1 yard of 35-inch contrasting fabric for the scarf collar. This is an Own Name pattern: the New York Pattern Company issued these envelopes without its usual branding, so that a department or dry-goods store could sell them as a house line. This copy comes from that world. Its original glassine envelope survives, stamped Barron Bros. of Texas, the small dry-goods store where the pattern was originally sold.
