Design
Own Name Pattern 154 closes on the shoulders and combines an undershirt and drawers in one small garment, with a drop seat built in for easy changing. Shaped ruffles trim the leg edges. This size takes 1⅜ yards of 35 or 39-inch fabric (or 1½ yards of 30-inch), plus 4½ yards of binding. The pattern has 6 pieces, cut with one-half pattern provided.
A Moment in Fashion History
A combination undergarment like this one did double duty for a busy 1930s household: one small, simply-cut piece instead of a separate shirt and drawers, with a drop seat that made changing a toddler quick work. The ruffled leg edges were a small, cheerful detail in a garment nobody but the child's own family would ever see. This is an Own Name pattern: the New York Pattern Company issued these envelopes without its usual branding, so that a department or dry-goods store could sell them as a house line. This copy comes from that world, and its own envelope carries the printed "OUR OWN" trademark. Its original glassine envelope survives, stamped Barron Bros. of Texas, the small dry-goods store where the pattern was originally sold. The glassine usually took the brunt of decades of handling damage before the envelope did, so a surviving glassine, even a worn one, is a genuine rarity.
