Design

This slip is cut from six pattern pieces, with a strap-extension on the right back lapped over the left and joined at the underarm to a front cut on the bias, giving the bodice a smooth, close fit through a deep V neckline. The left underarm seam is left open about five inches below the notches, bound and finished with snap fasteners for easy dressing. Shoulder straps are self-fabric, folded through the center and tacked to pointed front and back sections. The skirt portion joins front, side, and back sections at pressed plaits for shape without bulk, finishing at a width of about 2â…› yards at the lower edge in a size 36.

A Moment in Fashion History

The bias-cut slip was one of the defining foundation pieces of early 1930s dressing, designed to skim the body smoothly beneath the era's clinging bias-cut dresses. A well-made slip like this one was every bit as considered a purchase as the dress worn over it, since a poorly fitting slip could undo the line of an otherwise carefully chosen frock.
