Design
This "dress" is really two coordinated pieces working together: a two-piece skirt that opens at the left side rather than the back, paired with a front-closing blouse offering real choice at the neckline -- a high neck for a more covered look, or a V-neck for something softer. Long or short sleeves round out the options. Sold and worn as a matched set, it reads as a single dress while giving all the practical benefits of separates underneath. Five pattern pieces in all.
A Moment in Fashion History
Two-piece "dresses" like this one -- a coordinated blouse and skirt sold and cut as a matched set -- gave the polished look of a single garment while offering the practical advantages of true separates: easier laundering, and a top that could be dressed up or down independently of the skirt beneath it.
