Design
This dress wraps the body with a surplice waist crossed under a dramatic three-piece cape collar, its fluttering points echoing the softness of the era's cape-sleeve styling. A front band anchors the wrap, and long sleeves with turned-back cuffs are offered alongside a sleeveless option for warmer weather. The attached four-piece skirt is fitted through the hip, with a back belt inserted directly into the right underarm seam rather than a separate buckled closure -- a clean, almost hidden way to define the waist. Twelve pattern pieces in all.
A Moment in Fashion History
Surplice wraps and cape-style collars were a favorite early-1930s way to soften a fitted silhouette without adding bulk -- the cape collar in particular let a plain fabric, like the polka dot shown on the envelope, carry visual interest through movement rather than print alone. Belts inserted into a side seam rather than worn separately were a small but telling construction choice, prized for a cleaner line at the waist.
