Design

McCall's Pattern 8646 is a double-breasted topper coat with a rounded collar, patch pockets, and turned-back cuffs, cut with a swingy, boxy silhouette through the body and a pleated back panel that releases from a back band for ease of movement. View A is the longer-length version in a plain or plaid material; View B is a shorter length finished with a tie belt at the back for a more fitted look. Sixteen pieces are included, with optional shoulder pads and interfacing throughout.

A Moment in Fashion History

The topper - a loose, swing-cut coat worn over a slimmer dress or skirt - was a practical wardrobe staple of the early 1950s, offering a warm layering piece that didn't compete with the fitted silhouettes worn underneath. Offering both a longer and shorter length from one pattern let a home sewer choose the proportion that suited her wardrobe best.

The cover illustration has been digitally restored and enhanced by Judy Yates to highlight the original fashion artwork while preserving the character and artistry of this historic McCall's pattern envelope.
