Design

McCall's Pattern 6960 is built around a sharply fitted jacket with a button front and a crisp, pleated peplum flaring out at the hip, worn over a slim, straight skirt. Views A and C use long sleeves with turned-back cuffs, while View B offers a shorter-sleeve version that can be cut from one fabric or two contrasting materials for the jacket and skirt separately. Eighteen pieces are included, with shoulder pad sections and a pleated sleeve detail carried through every view.

A Moment in Fashion History

This suit dress is a textbook example of the New Look's sculpted tailoring: a tightly fitted jacket bodice, a dramatically pleated peplum at the hip, and a slim skirt below, all working together to create the nipped-waist, sharply defined silhouette that Dior's 1947 collection made the standard for the years that followed.

Illustration

The cover illustration has been digitally restored and enhanced by Judy Yates to highlight the original fashion artwork while preserving the character and artistry of this historic McCall pattern envelope.

Connections

This pattern is part of our ongoing exhibit, The Ladies of the New Look - a growing collection celebrating Dior's 1947 New Look, which defined the fashionable silhouette for the next decade: a more structured look built around a nipped waist, dramatic peplums, and wide, sculpted shoulders.
