Design

This 9-piece pattern is built around a fitted midriff panel, the real engine of its sheath silhouette - it nips the waist in sharply, giving the dress its "small waist" selling point, before easing into a slim, fitted skirt below. Above it, a notched square neckline softens into a decorative bow at the bodice front, and the dress can be made with a 3/4 length sleeve for a dressier finish or a short sleeve for everyday wear, both cut in one with the bodice for clean, minimal seaming.

A Moment in Fashion History

Marian Martin, like sister mail-order lines Anne Adams and Alice Brooks, brought current fashion directly to newspaper readers. This pattern's original newspaper advertisement pitched it as a flattering, waist-accentuating sheath suited to faille, satin, and wool for spring, or cotton and linen for warmer weather - practical, seasonally-minded marketing typical of the mail-order format. The fitted-midriff construction reflects the clean, closely shaped silhouette taking hold in the early 1960s.

Illustration

The cover illustration has been digitally restored and enhanced by Judy Yates to highlight the original fashion artwork while preserving the character and artistry of this historic Marian Martin mail-order pattern.
