Design

Pattern 3855 opens on the shoulders and slips over the head. View A pairs a round collar with a full-length flare sleeve, trimmed at center front with rows of soutache braid if desired; View B instead uses a plain square neck and a sleeve gathered to a wristband, with a cuff option for a shorter length. Both views share a casing at a slightly long waistline with elastic inserted, finished with either a wide belt trimmed at each side or a simple narrow sash tied at the right. Eight pattern pieces in all.

A Moment in Fashion History

Pattern 3855 appeared in the March 1923 issue of The Ladies' Home Journal, in a spread titled "Slip-On Frocks for the 8 to 14's" illustrated by Sarah S. Stilwell Weber. The magazine showed this design made up in black velvet with soutache braid trim and a woven belt, one of a pair of Easter frocks recommended for the age group alongside simpler plaited and dotted Swiss styles on the same page.
