Design

Pattern 3149 is a four-piece dress with a genuine choice of finish. View A slips on over the head through an oval neckline, its band collar extending into long tie ends at the left side for a scarf-like effect. View B instead opens at the back beneath a round neck and flat collar. Both share full-length kimono sleeves, perforated to shorten if wanted, and a skirt gathered to the waist at each side rather than all around.

A Moment in Fashion History

This pattern appeared in the June 1921 Ladies' Home Journal (page 55), in a feature on little-girl clothes for sports and dress-up. The magazine described a frill-less version in white flannel, linen, or cotton, embroidered with red, blue, or orange flowers and black stems and leaves - calling out the scarf collar ending in a wool tassel as an unusual but easy-to-add touch, well suited to an active, "very modern" child who wanted sports clothes early.

The cover illustration has been digitally restored and enhanced by Judy Yates to highlight the original fashion artwork while preserving the character and artistry of this historic Ladies' Home Journal pattern envelope.
