Design
The bateau neckline and fitted, side-seamed bodice keep this dress close to the body, while a tied bow or sash at the hip adds a single soft accent to an otherwise clean, unbroken sheath line. View 1 takes short sleeves for daytime wear; View 2 goes sleeveless for a dressier occasion. The pattern closes at the center back with a short neck-type zipper, and comes together from just ten pieces - a straightforward construction built to let the fabric and the hip-tie detail do the talking.
A Moment in Fashion History
By 1960, the sheath had become the era's default silhouette, and a pattern like this one shows how designers kept it from reading as plain: a single sash or bow at the hip, rather than a seamed waist or elaborate trim, was often all it took to give a slim dress a sense of occasion. It's a small, confident gesture that speaks to just how settled the sheath's dominance had become - it no longer needed convincing, just accessorizing.
