Design
Three parts build this look. The dress itself is a slim sheath on tiny shoulder straps, cut clean and close to the body. A separate waist-hugging cummerbund, boned with nylon boning for shape, breaks up the sheath's long line at the natural waist. Over both, a fitted jacket completes the ensemble, its hem finished in a soft scalloped edge rather than a straight cut. The 16-piece pattern closes with a 16" neck-type zipper at the back.
A Moment in Fashion History
By 1960, the slim sheath had firmly displaced the fuller New Look skirt as the era's defining daytime and evening silhouette. Advance 9328 shows how that simplicity was often dressed up rather than left plain: a waist-defining cummerbund and a softly scalloped jacket added shape and polish to an otherwise minimal foundation, letting the sheath's clean lines carry the look while the accessories did the styling work.
