Advance 8557: 1950s Chic Uncut Misses Slender Dress 36B Vintage Sewing Pattern
Original circa 1958 Advance Pattern No. 8557 - One-Piece Dress
Original circa 1958 Advance Pattern No. 8557, marketed on its own envelope as "the one-piece dress with a two-piece look." Semi-fitted lines, a low-placed hip band, and a tailored back bow create the illusion of two separate pieces from a single garment. A high oval neckline with a stepped, button-trimmed front and slightly dropped armholes complete the look. View 1 has below-elbow sleeves; View 2 is sleeveless. Envelope professionally repaired.

Design
The whole design idea sits at the waist: a low-placed hip band, finished with a tailored bow at the back, breaks the silhouette exactly where a real two-piece dress would seam - without an actual seam ever being cut. Above it, a high oval neckline takes a stepped, button-trimmed front, and slightly dropped armholes soften the shoulder line. The skirt stays slender throughout. View 1 adds below-elbow sleeves; View 2 goes sleeveless for a lighter look. Just twelve pieces produce the full illusion.
A Moment in Fashion History
Advance called this one "First in Fashion" right on the envelope, and the claim was really about construction, not just style: a genuinely convincing two-piece look, built entirely through band and bow placement rather than an actual waist seam. It's a small piece of dressmaking sleight of hand from the late 1950s - the visual vocabulary of a separates-and-blouse look, delivered with the ease and security of a single garment.
