Design
McCall's Pattern 5467 is a sheath dress with a softly sculpted line. The bodice has a lightly scooped neckline and kimono-style sleeves cut in one with the bodice, short in View B or three-quarter length in View A. An applied band covers the seam at the center front of the bodice and is seamed to a sash that wraps the waist and loops at the back, giving the dress an obi-like sash at the back. The four-gore skirt is slightly gathered into the waistline seam at the side front and has a pleat at the back; it may be lined. The dress closes with a left side zipper placket and measures about 45 inches around the hem in size 14. McCall's suggested printed silk or cotton, crepe, jersey, tissue faille, sheer wool, shantung, surah, and polished cotton.
A Moment in Fashion History
By 1960 the sheath had become the defining silhouette of the well-dressed woman, and pattern companies found endless ways to vary it. McCall's Pattern 5467 keeps the slim line but adds interest at the waist with a band and looped sash, a soft, sculptural detail in the spirit of the era's interest in East Asian influences. Its kimono-style sleeves and easy gathers show the turn toward softer, less rigid construction that would carry into the early 1960s.
