Design
Simplicity 3322 pairs a small-brimmed hat with a matching lined bag in two coordinating styles. Style 1's hat brim dips softly to one side, worn with a zip-closing bag holding two interior pockets, including a zippered compartment. Style 2 shapes the brim into a peaked-cap silhouette, paired with a bag that closes with a spring fastener and carries on an adjustable shoulder strap. Both hats are finished with a simple bias fabric bow. Eleven pattern pieces are included, suggested in pique, felt, wool, or velveteen for the hats, and wool, corduroy, taffeta, plastic, or felt for the bags.
A Moment in Fashion History
By 1950, a coordinated hat and handbag were considered essential finishing touches to a woman's daytime look, often chosen to match or complement an outfit's fabric and color. Small, close-fitting brims like these offered a tidy, tailored alternative to the more dramatic hat shapes of prior decades, while the shift toward structured, zip- or clasp-closed handbags reflected a growing emphasis on practicality alongside polish.
