Design
New York Pattern 1314 wraps a surplice waist into a collarless V-neck for a soft, flattering front, with sleeve length left up to the maker - long, 3/4, or short, each finished with a cuff. The removable belt marks the waist before the skirt flares out, sweeping to 77" around the lower edge at Size 16. Ten pattern pieces are included, suggested in broadcloth, shantung, faille, rayon crepe, tissue taffeta, or lightweight woolens.
A Moment in Fashion History
The surplice waist offered a softer alternative to a sharply darted bodice while still drawing the eye to a defined waistline - one of several ways early 1950s patterns achieved the era's signature fitted-waist, flared-skirt silhouette without relying on identical construction from house to house.

The cover illustration has been digitally restored and enhanced by Judy Yates to highlight the original fashion artwork while preserving the character and artistry of this historic New York Pattern envelope.
