Design

Simplicity 1172 builds a versatile layering system around one sleeveless foundation. The blouse is fitted with waistline darts beneath a clean bateau neckline, closing with a zipper set into the left side seam for a smooth fit whether worn alone or as a base layer. View 1 pairs it with a relaxed pullover shirt cut with three-quarter kimono sleeves, turned-back cuffs, a small collar, and a banded lower edge. View 2 offers a shorter-sleeved shirt instead, finished with two patch pockets at the lower edge for a more casual, sportier look. Thirteen pattern pieces are given across the two views.

A Moment in Fashion History

By the mid-1950s, the mix-and-match separate had become a staple of casual American dressing, letting a single sleeveless blouse serve as both a warm-weather top on its own and a foundation layer beneath a shirt for cooler days. Simplicity 1172 reflects this practical, easy-care approach to a growing wardrobe, styled here for both relaxed daytime wear and, per the envelope's own illustration, casual play in shorts.
