Design
McCall's Pattern 8983 is a button-front shirtwaist dress with a notched collar, short cuffed sleeves, patch hip pockets, and a fitted belted waist. View A can be made with either a slim, straight skirt or a fuller, more gently flared one, giving the same bodice two very different moods. View B adds a contrasting collar and cuffs for a crisper, two-tone finish. Thirteen pieces are included, closing at the back with a slide fastener.
A Moment in Fashion History
The shirtwaist dress was an early-1950s daytime staple, and this pattern's fitted, belted waist reflects the era's continued emphasis on waist definition even in an otherwise practical, easy-to-wear silhouette - a quieter, everyday counterpart to the more dramatic peplums and structured jackets that defined the decade's dressier New Look pieces.
Connections
This pattern is part of our ongoing exhibit, The Ladies of the New Look - a growing collection celebrating Dior's 1947 New Look, which defined the fashionable silhouette for the next decade: a more structured look built around a nipped waist, dramatic peplums, and wide, sculpted shoulders. Come take a look.
