Design
A front midriff section and underarm gussets shape the bodice close to the body above a tie neckband and button-front closure - a good amount of construction interest above the waist no matter which skirt follows it. View A pairs that bodice with a slim skirt and three-quarter cuffed sleeves for a streamlined daytime look. View B and C instead gather a full, circular skirt into the same waistline, worn with short sleeves, for a dramatically fuller silhouette. Thirteen pieces, one bodice, two very different dresses.
A Moment in Fashion History
1957 sits right at this exhibit's own starting line, and it's fitting that McCall's was already running the "choose your skirt" strategy this early - the same idea would resurface again and again through 1963 in patterns like McCall's 5357, 5885, and 6755, all elsewhere in this collection. Seen together, they trace just how long the industry kept hedging between the fuller New Look shape and the slimmer sheath, refining the same basic offer year after year rather than picking a side once and moving on.
