Design

McCall's Pattern 2263 gathers three distinct short-apron silhouettes. View A closes with a laced, corset-style waistband and pairs red rick-rack striping with nine jingle bells sewn along the hem for a playful, festive finish. View B is a fuller tiered apron, its three ruffled layers piped in contrast color, best suited to organdy or sheer fabrics. View C is a pocketed waist apron with vertical braid trim running the length of each panel, gathered onto a simple tie waistband. Ten pieces total.

A Moment in Fashion History

Bell-trimmed aprons like View A were part of a lighthearted late-1950s tradition of festive kitchen wear meant to jingle as the wearer moved - a small, cheerful flourish on an otherwise practical garment. This particular envelope carries a faded retailer stamp from a mid-century shopping plaza, a small trace of the working pattern shop where it was originally sold.

Illustration

The cover illustration has been digitally restored and enhanced by Judy Yates to highlight the original fashion artwork while preserving the character and artistry of this historic McCall's pattern envelope.

Connections

This pattern is part of our Kitschy Kitchen exhibit, a growing collection celebrating the whimsical, decorative side of mid-century kitchen textiles. While I love everything about McCall, it must be said, "McCall Makes the Cutest Aprons!"
