Design

McCall Pattern 8253 is a fully tailored suit in sixteen pieces. The jacket follows the figure through seamed fronts and back to a defined waist, then flares slightly over the hips, where two large patch pockets add emphasis. It closes with three buttons below notched lapels and a shaped collar, and is built the traditional way, with hair-canvas interfacing at the front and collar, a muslin-interfaced back, a full lining, and pattern pieces for shoulder pads. The gored skirt falls slim and straight to about 31 inches from the waist, closing with a 7-inch side zipper. View A is cut entirely in plaid. View B pairs a jacket in a contrasting fabric with the plaid skirt.

A Moment in Fashion History

Dior's first New Look suit paired a nipped jacket with a wide, full skirt, but within a few seasons the line narrowed. By 1950 the fitted, waisted jacket over a slim pencil skirt had become the tailored suit of the moment, keeping the New Look's emphasis on waist and hip while trimming the volume below. This McCall pattern captures that shift, putting a couture-inspired silhouette into a practical suit a woman could wear from office to afternoon.
