Design

Sized for older children, the two bib aprons are cut from one pattern and bound in red bias tape, with patch pockets low on the apron and a neck strap of self fabric or woven tape. View A, for the boy, comes with a chef's hat, and his embroidery shows a young cook in a striped shirt with a spatula, a smoking grill, and a table of soda bottles. View B, for the girl, shows her bending over a picnic basket while a puppy noses in, the grill beside her. A cotton-interlined mitt quilted in a windowpane pattern finishes the set. Six pieces and one transfer.

A Moment in Fashion History

McCall issued this junior set alongside No. 1597, a Mr. and Mrs. version of the same backyard-barbecue idea, so a whole family could turn out in matching aprons for the cookout. Postwar suburban life made the patio grill a family stage, and patterns like this one invited the children in as helpers. A small skunk drawn at the boy's feet adds the kind of humor McCall loved to put on its apron envelopes.

Illustration

The envelope front and back are shown as scanned, framed on our blue mat without retouching, so the artwork appears in its true color and condition. The front shows the boy, in a towering chef's hat, holding up a hot dog for his sister, with a skunk drawn at his feet. A purple ink line covers an old store stamp near the price.

Connections

Numbered side by side and copyrighted the same year, this junior set has a grown-up partner, McCall 1597, Mr. and Mrs. Aprons, Hats and Mitts: the same bib apron, chef's hat, and quilted mitt in adult size, with its own backyard-barbecue embroidery, so the whole family could turn out for the cookout.
