Design
This American Weekly dress is built around a deep V-neckline, with decorative trim running along the seams down through a gored, gently flared skirt. A self-fabric tie belt cinches the waist, and the dress closes at the back with a 12-inch slide fastener. Five pieces make up the whole design: front and back bodice, neck facing, sleeve facing, skirt, and tie belt.
A Moment in Fashion History
The American Weekly distributed its patterns as a newspaper supplement, putting fashion- forward designs like this one within easy reach of home sewers nationwide. The fitted waist, trimmed seaming, and gently flared gored skirt reflect the sculpted, waist-defined silhouette that carried into the early 1950s from Dior's New Look a few years earlier.

Connections
This pattern is part of our ongoing exhibit, The Ladies of the New Look - a growing collection celebrating Dior's 1947 New Look, which defined the fashionable silhouette for the next decade: a more structured look built around a nipped waist, dramatic peplums, and wide, sculpted shoulders. Come take a look.
