Design
McCall 7641 is a full-coverage pinafore built from seventeen pieces, with a fitted waist and gathered skirt beneath a front button closing. View A trims the shoulders with a ruffle and closes with a row of buttons down the front, finished with a wide tie belt that bows at the back. View B pares the design down to a simple sleeveless silhouette in lengthwise striped material, with just a back bow for a finishing touch. View C dresses the shoulders in wide eyelet embroidery edging and adds a patch pocket to the skirt, along with shoulder pads for structure. All three views share the same waist and skirt construction, letting the shoulder and closure details do the work of setting each version apart.
A Moment in Fashion History
The pinafore remained a practical staple of children's wardrobes well into the postwar years, worn as protective overlay for play or as a decorative layer over a plain dress. McCall 7641's range of finishes, from crisp eyelet trim to simple striped cotton, reflects how versatile a single well-constructed pattern could be for a growing family's everyday sewing needs.
