Design
Du Barry 1943B is an eleven-piece coat and hat set built for real everyday wear. The coat closes at the front with two or six buttons, finished with a welt pocket at the hip and set-in sleeves for a neat, tailored fit. Its turnover collar can be left plain and stitched, or dressed up with fur banding for cooler weather. The coat is fully lined and interlined, with interfacing at the front and collar for structure. The matching hat is built from a four-section crown and a roll-stitched brim, finished with a grosgrain ribbon band.
A Moment in Fashion History
A child's coat and hat set like this one was a wardrobe cornerstone of the early 1940s, built to be worn for years across a range of suggested fabrics, from practical broadcloth and pique to dressier velveteen or cashmere. The option to trim the collar in fur banding gave a single simple pattern the flexibility to read as either everyday outerwear or something a little more special.
