The blouse is shaped by pleats at the front shoulders and darts at the back neck, and finishes in a slashed peplum that falls over the hips beneath a narrow buckled belt. A soft tie collar softens the neckline, and the sleeves may be cut long with turned-back cuffs or short. The skirt is darted at the sides from the waistline, fastens at the left side-front, and has seams left open above the lower edge for ease in walking. Vogue suggested a contrasting collar and cuffs in silk crepe, georgette, organdie, or rayon against a frock of crepe, shantung, linen, jersey, or tweed.

A Moment in Fashion History

By 1931, the straight, short silhouette of the late 1920s had given way to a longer, more defined line. Hemlines dropped toward mid-calf, and the waist returned close to its natural place, often marked with a slim belt as it is here. The peplum on this overblouse shows how designers drew attention back to the waist and hip. The envelope comes from Vogue Pattern Service, published by Condé Nast from the Graybar Building in New York, and at 50 cents a Vogue pattern cost more than most. The back of the envelope explains the price, promising that the extra cost bought style insurance.

Illustration

The cover illustration has been digitally restored and enhanced by Judy Yates to highlight
the original fashion artwork while preserving the character and artistry of this historic Vogue
pattern envelope.

Connections

This pattern is part of our exhibit, Always in Vogue -- a growing collection celebrating the fashion-forward spirit of Vogue's home sewing patterns.
