Design

Ladies' Home Journal 3687 is a versatile girls' coat built from just six pieces. View A adds a dramatic back cape, cut in one piece and darted at the shoulder, graduating to nothing at a single perforation for a smooth, draping fit over the coat's kimono sleeves - a self-belt cinches the waist, threaded through tacked straps at the underarm seam. View B omits the cape for a simpler belted coat with the same two-piece kimono sleeve, offered with or without a turn-back cuff. Both views share a convertible collar: it can be buttoned close to the neck for warmth, or rolled open with the front edges laid low to form soft revers. A guide chart, patented August 15, 1905, is printed directly on the envelope to help confirm every piece before cutting.

A Moment in Fashion History

Girls' outerwear in the early 1920s increasingly borrowed silhouettes from womenswear, and the back cape seen here reflects a broader interest in dramatic, sweeping outerwear shapes during the period. This pattern appeared in the October 1922 issue of Ladies' Home Journal magazine, offering home sewers a coat versatile enough to be dressed up with its cape and fur or contrasting collar, or kept simple for everyday wear.
