Design
The dress itself is deceptively simple - four pieces, dart-fitted, scoop neck, cap sleeves cut in one with the body, a low back pleat for ease, and a left side zipper placket. The real design idea is what happens next: a button-on front band and belt turn it into View B; a detachable collar, finished with eyelet edging in the facing seam, turns it into View C; and a separate, collarless, open-front jacket - cut with unmounted cape-like sleeves and two-piece underarm gussets rather than a set-in sleeve - turns it into View D. One sheath, reconfigured rather than rebuilt.

By 1960, the sheath's dominance meant a woman could own essentially one silhouette and still need it to do a week's worth of work. McCall's "Accessory Dress" concept answers that directly - building versatility into the pattern itself through a detachable collar and a separate jacket, rather than asking the wearer to own several different dresses.
