Design
Advance 3452 gives a new layette everything at once from a single nine-piece pattern. The dress gathers to a lace-edged collar and closes with a few small buttons, worn over a coordinating slip cut with the same lace trim at the edges. A soft crown cap, banded and tied with ribbon, completes the dress-and-cap set. For everyday wear, the pattern includes a simple footed sleeper, plus a kimono-style wrap offered in either a long or short length, both finished with the era's classic blanket-stitch edging in place of a hem. Every piece uses the same half-inch seam allowance and simple construction, keeping the whole set genuinely achievable in a single sitting.
A Moment in Fashion History
Wartime fabric conservation shaped layette sewing just as it did adult fashion, and Advance 3452 reflects that economy: a single "One Size" pattern yielding a dress, cap, slip, sleeper, and kimono meant a new mother could outfit an infant's full wardrobe from a modest amount of fabric, with no sizing changes to plan for as the baby grew in those earliest months.
