Design
Simplicity Pattern 1439 builds an entire small wardrobe from minimal pattern pieces. The sleeveless dress or jumper has a low rounded neckline and self-fabric tie ends, adjustable at the waistline, with the neck and armholes bound in self-fabric or contrasting bias tape and optional rick-rack or button trim. The lace-edged petticoat gathers at the waistline with elastic, and the kimono-sleeved blouse can be made to match it, bound at the neck and sleeve edges. Remarkably, each of these four garments - dress, jumper, blouse, and petticoat - is cut from a single major pattern piece. Five pieces given in total.

Mid-1950s pattern companies experimented with genuinely minimalist construction as a selling point for children's basics, and this pattern is an unusually thorough example - four separate garments, each built from one major piece, rather than the multi-panel construction typical even of simple children's wear.
